A nonprofit built to empty every animal shelter — then disappear.

Best Friend builds free software that routes animals out of over-capacity shelters to the nearest open foster home, and gives the whole system away to any community that wants it.

It takes no donations and sells nothing. The entire ask is that you pass it on.
The software is free with no paid tier, and any community can download and run it themselves.
It is designed to become unnecessary. Success is shutting down.

What we do not claim

Every number below is one we could have put on this page and did not, because we cannot yet stand behind it end to end.

We do not claim to have reduced euthanasia rates anywhere. The network is new and that number is not ours to claim.
We do not claim partnerships with shelters that have not signed one. Ask us for the list and we will send exactly the signed ones.
We do not publish an animal-count figure, because we cannot yet verify one end to end.
We are not affiliated with Best Friends Animal Society. Different organization, similar name.

Boilerplate

Paste this as-is. It is accurate and it is cleared.

Best Friend is a nonprofit that builds free software for animal shelters. Its transport network matches animals in over-capacity shelters with the nearest available foster home, and the whole system is released free for any community to run itself. The organization accepts no donations and intends to shut down once shelter overcapacity is solved.
